Body Butter versus Lotions
The winter months are here and I’m lathering my moisturiser like crazy all over my body. After a few hours, I begin to see dry patches, especially on my legs. Is there a solution where I can keep my whole body moisturised 24/7? Yes there is! You might have heard or already use it, but it’s body butters. But what’s the difference between a body butter and a lotion? Which is better for my skin?
What are the differences?
Body butters are composed primarily of oils and butters. The natural oils and butter in body butters can penetrate through the surface of the skin. The science of this is based on “like dissolves like” which means that one substance can dissolve or break down substances similar to it. It’s meant to balance your skin. Meanwhile, lotions can contain up to 70% water. But isn’t water good for us? Yes, water is great to drink but not on the skin as it leaves us even drier. So most lotions are teamed up with other moisturising agents to prevent this dryness.
Which one should I be using?
It depends on your skin and the season. If you have really dry skin all throughout the year, then I’d recommend body butters. Beware of body butters which contain water (it will say aqua) and other harsh chemicals. A good body butter will be made with all natural ingredients such as shea, cocoa or even mango butters. It will be teamed up with oils such as coconut oil, jojoba, macadamia oil and pure essential oils for added benefits! It should feel hard during the colder seasons and soft during the warmer days. Last of all, it should be preservative free as it contains NO water!
During the summer months, body butters may not be needed as much and this is where lotions can come in handy. Lotions are created to be absorbed quickly but does not necessarily maintain 24 hour hydration (regardless what they say!). Some natural skincare products will contain less than 50% water and you are actually buying the good ingredients, such as my face creams. You can’t tell this by the labels unless you know the creator. I’m telling you now, my face creams contain less than 50% water and it’s rose water! From personal experience, I use body lotions in the hotter months only because my skin is a combination/normal during these months.
It’s a personal choice whether you use body butters or lotions. During these winter months, my Whipped Body Butter has been doing wonders for my skin as I no longer have dry patches. Remember to always choose natural ingredients that are chemical free!
Stay Natural,
